Cal State Series #8, Big Bear Shootout #2

by Mark Scheetz

September 17

The itching and oozing from last weeks poison oak rash still kept me awake most of the night. I almost didn’t head up to Big Bear; I was too tired to even drive. So I juiced up on several cups of coffee and a Red Bull.

Not much to say about the race. I did my best, and really sucked! I ended up taking 5th (again). I actually rode a decent race, no crashes or mechanicals. I executed perfectly riding a hard pace and pushing myself right up to the edge. I just wasn’t feeling well enough to be competitive at the top of the class.

The day was perfect for racing with temps in the low 70’s. Big Bear is a high altitude course. You will hear some refer to it as “Big Bore”. Most of the 29 mile course was on fire roads. When we pealed off onto single track, it actually became highly technical in small doses. The final descent took us down a very steep and rocky trail called “Fall Line”.

I was hoping to finish the season with strong results and maintain the series points lead. It looks like now my battle will be for 3rd or 4th place depending on who shows up for the remaining races. I needed to place in the top 3 to stay on top of the point’s game.
